This book is a bit darker than my usual taste but the imagery is fantastic. It is easy to visualize the happenings. The tone is consistent throughout. There are several themes: love, loneliness, and the past finding a way to catch up with you, are the main ones.I read this over the span of a day. I could not put it down. Thanks to the Kindle App, I was able to read consistently on my iPhone. I hope that Horn continues with this as a series. I am quite interested in knowing what happened to the town after the resolution and the women who were able to board that train! I can easily see this as being a series like his Savannah "Line" books. I have recommended this to my 10th grade ELA students who like the vampires and witches stories! Several have read and it's made for interesting book reviews and dialogue in class.
I got this book but held off reading it because I really had no idea what to think it might be. It has been decades since I heard the word "shivaree" and it just would not fit in place. But once I started reading I was captured by an extremely well written story. The 50's perspective rang true to my memories. The small town Southern perspective also rang true. Given a strong place and time, it was easy to slip into the story web woven by deft hands. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Southern Gothic literature and a paranormal cast of characters.
I really enjoyed this story and when I got into the latter chapters I couldn't put it down. Much darker than the Witching Savanna series, this one is grittier and scarier and I think it stands on it's own. Made me feel what it might have been like to live in the south in the 1950's, but with a supernatural flair. Some of the characters are likable, some downright detestable, but they feel real as you read about them, dark secrets and all. A sequel would be nice to find out what became of everyone.
Argh! What a good book! I think this is the first Southern Gothic novel (Do the Witching Savannah novels count?) I have read, which may be why I am so enamored with this genre, but I am hooked. The horror builds and is subtle without being completely absent from the story or too "in your face." It is a gentle southern horror, if you will. The author uses the story and language to make the book much more than a cheap Amazon Kindle thrill. I have to say that the book description doesn't quite to it justice, because if it did, I would have read this book sooner and I feel like many more people would have picked it up as well. But with that being said, I just bought two more books that are Southern Gothic as well. I am hooked and I wait for more from J.D. Horn.
I loved JD Horn's The Line series...I thought they were original, well written and different from most of the other things I've ever read. Full of enjoyable suspense, narrative twists and turns, characters I don't see every day. And then there's this. Where that series was well developed and thought out, this seems to have been an idea thrown together at the last minute...more like someone lost a bet and had to write a book in a week than like the author sat down and fleshed out something they wanted to write. The author's ability is so much better than this example, I would warn people to avoid this and read The Line series instead and just pretend this didn't exist.
Well, well. JD Horn has done it again. "Shivaree" is so different from his other books. How gifted an author he is! "Shivaree" is a bit on the dark side. the beautiful Ruby is the perfect example of, beauty is on the inside. I highly recommend this new book by JD and if you haven't read his other books, then get them. I promise you won't be disappointed. He is one of my favorites.
I enjoyed this book just like I do everything I have read from J,D. Horn. I felt that the characters were well developed and the plot, while slow in some spots, was steady for the most part. I have to admit that I did kind of see the end of the book coming which caused me to give it four stars instead of five, but still it was highly enjoyable. I will read more of J.D. Horn when he publishes another book.I recommend this book highly!
This was a gripping and captivating book. If you're a fan of all things weird or unique you'll love this book. I was hooked from the start because the suspense began at the start. The characters were fascinating and interesting, each had their own back story adding to the suspense. Not a dull moment with this book. An absolute must read.
