The book arrived very quickly, and it is in like new condition. It is a fantastic book for a beginner gardener like myself. It is a big book, with 271 pages, and a lot of color photos. The book is easy to read, and very informative.
Quite educative and concise.
As a child, I lived in Indiana, and I've lived all over since. Shawna Coronado's book brought some old memories back of grandma's house and some of the very special flowers she had all around her yard. Joe-Pye weed, lily of the valley...even those towering catalpas with their long beans hanging down. The pictures in the book reminded me of summers at the farm. I especially loved the "Try These" tips at the end of each listing--just like your next door neighbor talking over the fence about what had worked best for them. She writes in an appealing, easy style that gets her point across without being too jargony. I know it says "Indiana", but I'd guess Ohio and Pennsylvania have similar climates, and this book's suggestions could work there too! Enjoyed it very much.
Author Shawna Coronado is an experienced gardener who shares her practical and pretty information with Indiana gardeners. This helpful book explains crucial gardening basics often overlooked in gardening books.. All gardeners will appreciate clear instructions on how to install a rain barrel, how to figure out what kind of soil you have on your property and how to conduct your own soil percolation (drainage) test. This useful guide lists annuals, perennials, vines, shrubs and trees that will grow well in Indiana. As a native plant specialist and a pollinator and beneficial insect supporter I very much appreciate the author's inclusion of a perennial wildflower and native grasses section!
This is a glorious book! It is well-written and carefully and thoughtfully researched. It opens by discussing the therapeutic benefits of gardening and how to achieve the best success for your region. This book discusses the need for preservation of water and how to do this by constructing rain barrels for collection and water retention. It also guides the reader in testing the soil for it's nutrient content and provides instructions and illustrations on how to enrich the existing soil while promoting both drainage and water retention. The reader is guided in producing a bountiful garden that promotes both a sense of wellness and a healthy lifestyle while providing exercise and therapeutic stress-relief. This book successfully illustrates how to choose and grow a variety of plants and shrubs that are indigenous to the region. It highlights the plants and shrubs that are native to the region and guides the reader in choosing these plants for successful cultivation in various growing conditions. This book outlines and directs even the beginner to gardening success. The instructions are clear and concise and the photographs are beautiful! Well done, Shawna Coronado! I give it 5 GREEN THUMBS UP!
Everything you need to know to grow a beautiful garden if you live in this climate zone. Shawna shares her personal experience from her own garden with plenty of tips that include fertilizing to composting. The book is packed with suggested annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs that thrive in Indiana making this a worthwhile guide to have with you when you visit the garden center. This book is perfect for beginner gardeners but the on going care instructions and companion planting suggestions would be valuable to seasoned gardeners as well.
Rather than just an encyclopedia of plants suitable to the Indiana climate, the author Shawna Coronado begins by giving you a glimpse into her own garden as she tells you how she has grown from the child playing in the dirt to the adult whose personal gardening philosophy is to celebrate nature and share it with others. The main text is a well laid out reference with tips on companion planting and design as well as regional advice and includes almost 200 plants. Highly recommended.
I love the layout of this book. For every flower and ornamental plant I want to grow, I can find a simple to follow description for its care in Indiana Getting Started Garden Guide. This book will remain one of my first resources for each spring as I plan out my gardens. I love the suggested companion plants with each variety. My book is full of bookmarks for pages I know I will refer to often. My friends request to borrow this book but it’s hard to let it go.
