Just took this CLEP exam today and passed with flying colors - phew!! I found this to be an excellent study guide -- there was only one other to choose from and I thought this had potential. This study guide is very easy to understand and the format is great for studying - each subject is broken down into simple blocks of instruction. This book covers all of the major literary periods and the major contributors to each. The guide provides links where additional information can be found online -- you absolutely MUST be familiar with these links to pass the test. I used SparkNotes and Schmoop (I love Schmoop!! - I enjoy their fun take on literature and poetry etc...) online for additional study material and summaries of all the major works. I also purchased the CLEP online study guide which was extremely helpful and in my opinion, necessary to pass the test. I also would have purchased English Literature For Dummies but I think it is out of print? I do have it's counterpart, American Literature For Dummies which is an excellent study guide for the American Lit. CLEP. I would highly recommend this guide. It's not only a great study guide, it will serve as a reference for me for years to come when I become a teacher!!
This book actually taught me the subject. It told me specifically what I needed to know in order to pass the test! It was a lot of work-but if you put the time in and study hard, using this book as your guide you will pass the test! And yes, I passed this test without having any background knowledge of the subject!
I took my first Clep test a couple month ago and used this Study Guide. Great condensed version and "study" friendly as in you can make notecards or quickly type notes from the pages. I would definitely recommend to a friend.
Just passed this exam and would not have been able to do it without this book. It was clear and concise and helped guide my study and provide me with everything I needed to know.

Everything you need to know is in this book. Do not listen to those reviewers who say that it covers nothing...you just have to know how to use it.First, the book is split into four sections: 1. Terms and Time Periods - this section defines all of the literature terms you will need to know, and also lists the major literary works for each time period 2. Summaries - this section has summaries of the most important works of literature. These are the stories that you will have the most questions on. 3. Sample Test Questions - this section has a large number of sample questions that you can practice with. 4. Appendix - the appendix contains more summaries of important literary works.Second, you have to know how to use the book. All of the material you will need to read is NOT in this book. But don't worry, it tells you WHAT you need to read...each term and definition includes a link to a story or poem that serves as an example of that concept. If you go to these links you will both learn the meaning of the terms, and also learn the stories! Yes, you have to use your phone or computer, but that way you save money because otherwise the book would have to be huge to hold all the stories you need to read.Third, the links I mentioned are not always that helpful and sometimes the content is missing. I ended up using CliffsNotes to read summaries of the stories and poems...its not a big deal, as the book still tells you what to read.Finally, you really just need to study. Take about three weeks and really learn the material. Procrastination is tempting, but you will see much better results if you study well ahead of test day. Set small goals: maybe 3 or 4 pages a day. I found it helpful to make flashcards with important stories and terms.
