Good book. It offered many things to consider. I would recommend the book for those who are not interested in polyamory or being a slut. In general the focus of the book was to reflect about yourself and gain a greater understanding of how that relates to your communication style in relation to others. I found it useful and I have also used some of the ideology when working with clients interested in polyamory or just in understanding and asserting themselves more in romantic or other partnerships.
This is a must read for everyone who is in a relationship, regardless of their view regarding monogamy. One of the best, if not the best self help relationship book on the market. Chapters dealing with all aspects of everyday relating to your partner of choice, don't let the title fool you, you don't need to be a s**t to gain essential insight into relationships of every kind.
Amazingly simplistic approach to a complex subject, written by people whose only qualifications are that "they did it." Themajor issue I have with the entire concept the book embraces is that there is one person - you - that deserves unlimited love and sexual pleasure, and all others that are within your life also deserve the same unlimited love and sexual pleasure. There is no regard for the value of "us", just "I", and no value for the length of time a relationship lasts either. While the author's recommendations for communication are solid, the basis on which their theory stands is weak, and is written with a patronizing tone. You either agree with us, or you are just not as evolved as we are. One day you might catch on.... Please. There are many more book with greater insight and better assistance than this one. Pass on this one and keep looking.
I realize this is pitched as sort of a "Bible" for poly folks, but it seems to state the obvious to me: values, standards, and norms -- especially those regarding sex, gender, sexuality, relationships, etc -- are culturally relative or entirely subjective in nature. There are no value "facts" empirically verifiable and testable by scientific means, which leaves an "each to their own" system, coupled with responsibility, accountability, and honesty (hence the ethical qualification). What is remarkably disturbing about the book is its inability to turn around and apply critical thinking and criticism of the poly lifestyle, vs. providing a laundry list and library of guidelines and prescriptions (which could have been done in 25% of the space). In this regard, it is more of a dogmatic manifesto, Beyond the easy to dismiss archaic and religious criticisms of polyamory, are the authors able to articulate any sociological, psychological, or cultural downfalls of the lifestyle, or is this merely a "Polyanna" perspective of Poly? ;-)
This book could basically be summed up by:1.) Have good communication skills with your partner2.) Be honest with your partner and just as importantly yourself3.) If you feel something, say something in a constructive, solutions oriented way (mayne a repeat of bullet 1.)4.) Do not feel pressure to act or feel a certain way (maybe a repeat of 2.)That's about it, in so many words.
Great book on polyamory and multiple love partners and monagamous relationships alike. This text incourages open communication and honesty that is lacking in many relationships.Will buy more books by this author.
Its a good book with a wonderful guide to how to live this live style. I would get this book if you want to try this life style out. Having rules, codes and guidelines is helpful for making this work.
I can't tell you how many of my partners have recommended this book, and it lives up to the hype! It explains everything in a way that's very easy to understand, and gives some great tips that work for both polyamorous and monogamous relationships.
