"Horner's anecdotes make Reading the Race a worthwhile read for those whose primary interest is the European pro peloton, but really the book isn't aimed at the armchair rider, it's a practical manual for those who want to learn the tricks of the trade." - Podium Cafe "The descriptions of specific group tactics, such as pacelines, echelon riding and the like, are clearly illustrated and annotated. If you have any doubts as to how any are to be implemented in real life, these leave no doubt as to how each ought to be successfuly accomplished." - The Washing Machine Post "In the Reading the Race, [Horner and Smith have] outlined the key mechanics of reading a race - and more importantly, how to win. Starting breaks, forming alliances, managing a lapped field, setting up for a sprint, it's all there." - Road Bike Review

Fantastic book. I have never raced but was asking a racer for advice for potentially racing next season and he suggested I read this book. I am glad I did.I wasn't sure what to expect, but this book is super entertaining, super informative, and super easy to read.As a long time Tour de France watcher, (ABC's Wide World of Sports on Sunday Afternoon anyone?) among other pro races I could find throughout the year, I felt I had a pretty good handle on team racing and personal racing strategy but was surprised to learn so much more though Reading The Race.Being a long-time fan of Chris Horner, his inputs into this book added a ton of personal experience and great advice on top of the authors already great advice. Finally, I'm currently in central Ohio doing my riding, and clearly the author is also a racer in Ohio, so the local race reference are a added bonus. Although, no matter where you live, get this book if you want to read up on race strategy and tactics either as a team or just on your own.
I've been racing off and on since the 1980's and I have read almost every book written in English about the tactics and techniques of the sport. This is one of the best, and for the typical American amateur racer, the best manual about "how to race bikes".The author covered just about everything, and did it well with humor and stories. Especially the last few chapters on teams and goals, great reminders about what's really important.Unequivocal recommendation. Buy it. Read it. Get your teammates to read it. Require any new teammies to read it. Have a test.
This is a great book. Even if you arent planning on joining a race, but are thinking of joining a sunday peloton ride, i recommend you give this book a read. First off the author is very knowledgeable in the subject and has been steered in the right direction by his cycling buddies. Second, the book isnt as funny as others but it does have its share of funny which makes it an addictive read. There are gems galore in here, i really recommend this book to anyone who rides a bike and is unsure about road rules, drafting, pedaling, and tons of other topics about this great sport.
some experienced racers might find some of the guidance obvious but for someone like me, it is always great to learn more about the thinking aspects of racing and teamwork. The author's writing style is casual, self deprecating, but sometimes funny. The Chris Horner stories are a great add to make the points - just wish there were more of them.I really enjoyed reading this book.
I love this book, it hits it right on with inside secrets on how to race your bike. If you want to get the jump on your competition and have some usually-only-learned-by-doing insights, pick it up!The only negative I have is that I expected the contributions by Chris Horner to be larger and more frequent. As it is the ones that are in there are great though.
I've read a few books about tactics. This one has helped me so much more than any of them. It is easy to understand, and there is good advice for learning the skills you must have to succeed in racing. The author has a ton of experience in the types of races we do around here (amateur - United States). This book has helped me get over the fear of crits, know when to get into a breakaway, and when and how to save energy in a race. I'm a cat 4 so I don't really understand strategy too well - and neither does my competition. I had my best result ever in a road race last weekend (2nd) after putting into practice a couple of things from this book. Basically, I got myself into the winning breakaway. I would not have recognized it as the winning break had I not read this book.
A great book which will help you understand riding in a group whether you race or ride for fun. It's written in entertaining style; the stories which pro cyclist Chris Horner interjects are an added bonus. The author has included diagrams which helps the reader comprehend and utilize the author's points. There is a lot of good information on bike handling skills which can benefit all cyclists from serious racers to casual riders. Bicycling is a dangerous pastime. This book will help anyone who takes the time to read and understand the information .
