Double Exposure: A Twin Autobiography is written by both Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt (1904-1965) and Lady Thelma Furness (1904-1970) – twin sisters. Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt was a socialite and mother of fashion designer Gloria Laura Vanderbilt; Lady Thelma Furness was an actress and the mistress of the British King Edward VIII and Prince Aly Khan.Readers know which twin is writing through the use of clear headings. The twins take it in turns to write, resuming where their twin finished, so that there is minimal overlap in the chronology of events (hence the flow is all rather tidy and organized). Thelma begins with the early years. Gloria begins when they are sixteen and living together in New York during the Roaring Twenties. They both write of their respective marriages. Thelma discusses her brief Hollywood years and of her affair in 1930 with King Edward VIII (the Prince of Wales), while she was still married, and her travels with him to Kenya.The writings are similar, although Thelma is more chatty and spontaneous, whereas Gloria is more succint and measured. Thelma is the one that wrote the most in the autobiography. Her best writing is of her romance with the King and her time in Kenya. She makes a comparison to Edward and her friend Wallace Simpson – Edward eventually abdicated his position as King of England to marry Wallace. Gloria’s best writing is of her move to California in 1940.Thelma began the autobiography, and also finishes it, with the line ‘Gloria and I are now businesswomen. We live together quietly in a small apartment in New York.’ They are buried side-by-side. For readers interested in the Vanderbilt empire, and the lives of two formidable women, this is a satisfying and interesting double autobiography.
This was a good read if you are interested in the history of society families such as the Morgans and Vanderbilts. I didn't realise until nearly finished reading that this book was written over 50 years ago so it truly is of another era. It is about the Morgan twins, of well-to-do backgrounds, their early years, their unstable mother, career-busy father, and seemingly erratic upbringing. Then it ventures into the early adulthood, marriages and motherhood. An interesting glimpse into society life in the early 20th century. Well written, it's a captivating read, helping to demonstrate that all that glitters is not gold. Absolute bargain for the price.
I previously had heard of the book while reading Barbara Goldsmith's " Little Gloria Happy at Last" published in 1980. If you want a concise and well researched account of little Gloria Vanderbilt's life and custody trial, I would recommend the Goldsmith book. This work is a very light hearted account of Big Gloria's early life, marriage to Reggie Vanderbilt, her widowhood and custody trial. Since it is her personal account, only her side is given. It's very one sided and glosses over many topics. Little Gloria published several autobiographical novels and they are interesting reads. I would recommend the Goldsmith book and use this as an afterread.
I enjoy reading stories about the lives and times of those who lived during the turn of the 20th century. It's one of my favorite times in history. This autobiography by the Morgan twins was well written and gave an interesting insight into the lives of the elite during that time. It held my attention, but at the same time, following the wealthy around with their maids, butlers, nannies, and chauffeurs was a bit off-putting for me. Having grown up poor and working hard for every dollar earned, I found their excesses and frivolous lifestyle difficult to read about at times, but that was their life and that was what they were writing about. One thing that struck me odd was how young they were when their parents set them free out into the world: sixteen. They left home as youngsters and moved to New York by themselves. At sixteen, the brain is far from being fully developed, yet they were playing the grownup game with real grownups.A bad marriage for one twin and another twin thought it funny when her decades-older fiance said, "What! You're only seventeen?" That fiance was Reggie Vanderbilt, by the way. So even though I cringed a few times at the lives the Morgan twins were living, I still enjoyed the book.
This was a very interesting and well-written book. I have already read just about everything written about the younger Gloria Vanderbilt. Her mother, Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt, was always portrayed as the "self-serving stranger" who only cared about her daughter's money. This book provided a whole different side of that's story. The identical twin sister, Thelma Furness, who's life went in much different directions, also provided some very interesting insights. No matter what the circumstances, these women remained close and mentally connected to each other their entire lives. This book is definitely a "keeper". My thanks to all those who made it available again to history enthusiasts such as myself.
I found this book quite by accident while browsing for something new to read. I was captivated by the story from the very beginning. There was so much I didn't know, even though I'd heard the story of "the poor little rich girl". I was also fascinated by the time period the Morgan twins described. It seemed so romantic. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed this genre. The book made me want to read more about the other people in this book, particularly Little Gloria. Was she really as self centered as described by her mother? I plan to look for other books regarding the same subject.
