"Judgmental Maps" is a very pointed, impolite, and most importantly, funny book on regional quirks in US cities and states. To say the book is politically incorrect is an understatement, and I mean that as a high compliment. A look at my hometown of Charlotte, NC reveals the area I grew up in to be "hipsters", "heroin", "shady car dealerships", and simply "don't go here after dark". Far from being offended, I laughed out loud when I saw that as there's more than a modicum of truth to what he says (though it wasn't that way when I grew up there). A quick look at my current locale in the Minneapolis metropolitan area reveals that I live near "girls named Kelly" and "VW Golf drivers", both of which also have merit. If you can't laugh at yourself this is probably not the book for you. It skewers everyone with the same aplomb and is highly recommended. I gave it four instead of five stars on a technicality because the contrast between the font and the background is frequently difficult to read, and I didn't want to miss any of the disrespectful generalizations Trent Gillaspie makes in this atlas with a difference.
We travel a lot to different cities. I was looking for something to give me some insight before we got to a new place so I would kind of know what to expect. This does not help me at all. Not even one mention of any place in Arizona. Also, not a word about Tampa, FL. What gives? Also the lack of identification and names or landmarks of areas on the maps makes it hard to tell where areas are if you are not very familiar with the area. Just really poorly done. Seems like it was thrown together to make money without being truly helpful. If you just want a laugh then maybe this is for you. FYI: There is lots foul language used. All in all it is not for me.
Yes it can. Somehow simultaneous hilarious but important, Judgmental Maps will quickly have you thumbing through to your home town and silently nodding at agreement. The format consists of city-scale maps scattered liberally with two or three-words bites that capture the mood of an area perfectly - "Old Money", "Crappy Apartments" and "Traffic Nightmares" are mixed with "Poor People", "Old Democrats" and "Hoochie Mamas" like road signs with Tourettes.It's hard to know whether this should be compulsory coffee table material or if we should simply federally mandate distribution by realtors. The information in the book confirms your inner suspicions about where you live and provides an essential insight into any place you thought you wanted to go. I can only speak knowledgeably about the places I have lived in the US - San Antonio, Austin, San Francisco and New York City - but the startling accuracy leads me to believe it it can give you a two-year head-start on any metropolitan area.Hopefully this concept gets expended to other countries, restaurants, cars and clothing brands.
This is a gem of a book! If you are already inclined to be agoraphobic, this book will give you the push that you need. Perfect for the holidays! Need a white elephant gift? Not sure what to get for your racist uncle? Do you have a constipated friend? This book is what you need! Enjoy!
This is definitely a book meant for coffee table display, rather than be hidden away in a bookcase. Too funny. My city is listed in the book, but even if it wasn't, I would still enjoy the author's "judgement" of some of America's well-known cities. I hope he updates. America has a lot of cities ripe for "judgement."
I love Trent's humor, which started here in the Mile High city! So happy to finally have this book on the coffee table. I am now learning how to judge people in other cities not named Denver.
I bought this for my husband, and every time someone comes over they comment on it, then ask to 'see' it, (they pick it up) and then 'Do you mind if I read this book?'. Now, it's not really a book that you read from front to cover, but everyone always wants to look at the state they are from, or places they have visited, or places they will visit - it's a great book! A great talking point, so glad I bought it.
If you're looking for a big laugh and have a great sense of humor, this is a centerpiece coffee table book. My family and friends can't stop laughing and every time they open it they find something new. It's like going back and watching a Quentin Tarantino film and seeing something you didn't notice from the last time you watched it. Hat tip to Trent on this huge endeavor to bring out the humor in all cities.
