I have been an elementary school teacher for a while, and for as long as I can remember (even back into young childhood), geography has been a weakness of mine. I know the bare bones basics, but I realize that I don't have the worldly knowledge that I feel I should have, certainly as a teacher, but also just as a person!I was interested in this Countries of the World book because it said it was "quick facts." I was hoping the book would give important details about each country, things that everyone should know, without going into too much depth or information. If I wanted that, I would read a textbook! This book did not disappoint. Literally, it listed a country, some important facts, an important photo, and then on to the next country. This is exactly what I was looking for. While I thought I would browse this book and then keep it as a reference, I found myself reading it page by page. It's a quick read, and I really enjoyed the information and especially the photos.Many people are turned off when they open a reference book and find paragraph after paragraph of information. Not only is that dull and boring, but it's so hard to find the information you are seeking. This book has it all spelled out and easy to find. I appreciate that. Typically the pages list the country, capital, language, population, currently, landmarks, and then a paragraph or so about the country, then a picture.I received this product for free or at a discounted rate in exchange for product testing and an honest review. Great book. Easy to read format. There are 23 different countries accompanied by a high quality photo of a famous landmark of that country. Every entry contains the country's name, official language, population, currency, landmark, and a paragraph about the country in general (sometimes containing historical or technical information). This is a book that a child might read mainly to practice reading, because it's too hard to gain a lot of information about a particular country for, say, a research project. The most information you would be able to gain about a particular country is...well...1 paragraph.Photos are high quality stock photos. In this particular book, the photos are actually of the country. If my knowledge of countries is correct, the photos to necessarily correspond to the famous landmark. This would have been nice and helpful. But some countries, like Japan, mention Mt. Fuji and Osaka Castle as the famous landmarks, but the photo is of a shopping street with a lot of signs, however, the United Kingdom mentions Big Ben and then has a photo of the famous clock. This will be confusing for parents and child readers who will not know if Mexico's photo is of Chichen Itza (which is the recognized famous landmark in the book) or of something else without further research. Other than this inconsistency of used photos, the book is top notch and would be great for 2-3rd grade readers.I received this product at a free or discounted rate in exchange for an honest review.
