From the Author
"Think-A-Lot-Tots: The Animal Cell" is the first book I have written and published. Driven as a mother to educate and inspire, I found that there was a gap in current available literature when it came to introducing my child to the basics of science and biology. I decided I would create my own stories as an avenue of new learning (and if nothing else, to hear a toddler or young child try to pronounce "mitochondria" and explain to them in all earnest what a "lipid bilayer" is). It is fascinating what our children can learn about even at the youngest of ages. As a result, it is never too early to start! So here we are, at the beginning, with the first book I have written and published. I hope you are as excited as I am to read this to your little loved ones and hear them ask with sincere curiosity, "What's that?".

Dr. Thomai Dion takes an abstract topic and makes it tangible for young readers. For an elementary student, this books engages by asking questions, teaches with repetition in prose and provides imagery with words. For teachers, this book is a great resource for use as an introduction to a classroom unit on cells. Bravo!
Thomai's gift for writing may only be matched by her ability to create vibrant, eye-catching illustrations. My little one was completely captivated.
Easy to understand and explain for your child.
SUMMARY: This books takes children through the cell one part at a time. It names each major part and tells what each part does.ILLUSTRATIONS: The pictures are a little ho-hum for a children's picture book, but cells are not an easy thing to make interesting through pictures. The author does a great job of using different colors for each part and using the same color for the name of the part.THE GOOD: This book breaks down the parts of the cell in an easy to understand manner. I think the author needs to write a whole set of these books, written in the same manner, for high school!THE NOT AS GOOD: I understand the author's passion for bringing difficult science concepts to young children. The younger you teach a child a concept, the more like she is to hold on to that concept. But I think animal cells is a very very abstract concept to start with for toddlers. I don't see a toddler sitting down while you read this book to him.AGE RECOMMENDATION: Grades 1 and up.NOTE: I received a free electronic copy of this book in order to write an honest review.
Thomai Dion is an author who’s not afraid to write real science for little kids (and their parents). As a scientist herself and the mother of an inquisitive child, she knows the drive that kids have to understand the world they live in, and everything that shares their world. There’s never enough information to satisfy them. This terrific little book takes children on a tour of the fundamental building block of every animal on the planet - people included. From familiar concepts, the author leads her readers on a tour of the animal cell, introducing a new element on each page and describing the work it does, till the whole structure is revealed.Complicated? Not for a child’s mind.Little kids who are lucky enough to meet this book will encounter the very same terms that scientists use to name and describe the parts of an animal cell - and what mysterious, magical, captivating names they are! My personal favourite is the golgi apparatus (how could you not love a name like that?) I could tell you what the golgi apparatus does, but that would be such a spoiler.Do your tots a favour and read them this book. You’ll be switching them onto science in a big way.
This book is a fun read, which explains what a cell is in a way that any bright and inquisitive young child will be able to understand.Do you know a bright little child with a thirst for knowledge? Then grab a copy of this book, and read it with them! Alternatively, just grab a copy for yourself, and enjoy a simple, and fun, science lesson.*Note: I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. However, this has in no way influenced either my opinion of the book, nor the contents of this review.
Dr. Dion sent me this book to distribute through my Little Free Library. She did NOT ask me to write a review...however I feel compelled to do so. The book is paperback, and the paper quality has a really nice feel. The illistration are delightful and quite unique. The content is extrordinary....Children are seldom given the oppertunity to hear about the basics of what actually MAKES a body. Dr. Dion's writting is both whimsical and medically accurate. Huge cudos for bringing a tough subject to light for our Little ones!
This book does a great job of introducing children into a what could be an overwhelming topic. It delivers the information in a child friendly manner that they can grasp. My 3 yr old daughter has never heard or tried to say MANY of the words in this book before. She enjoyed the challenge and at the end of the book said, "Mommy, that was a funny book."There is definitely a need for more educational books for kids. Keep them coming!
