There is some fascinating material in this study, but Segal allows her conclusions to shape her presentation of the evidence. Twin studies have demonstrated that nature plays a greater role than nurture compared to what had once been thought. The most persuasive evidence of this comes from the intriguing fact that twins raised separately become more similar to one another the older they are and the more time their underlying genetic similarity has a chance to assert itself. The specific examples that Segal has compiled, some from the famous Minnesota twin study, are quite fascinating and make for absorbing and thought-provoking reading. But this evidence, some scientific and some anecdotal, doesn't demolish the claims of nurture as much as Segal sometimes implies.Even more disturbing to me, however, was the bias that runs through the book that twins have such a unique and special relationship that their lives should be valued above the lives of "singletons." While her comments on twin bereavement (in chapter 9) are moving and interesting, she gets into dangerous territory (in chapter 14, "Twins in the Courtroom") when she describes accepting employment as an expert witness. Here the author describes the times that she has been called upon to testify on behalf of plaintiffs to maximize the damages they can get in wrongful twin death cases. While she does not know to what extent her testimony assisted her clients, in most cases lawyers have assured her "it was significant," a fact in which she takes some pride. This application of research to place a special value on one kind of life over others struck me as highly distasteful, and I felt the author lost all claim to a scientific tone or perspective in this part of the book.Since the book was really too long (more than 400 pages), I wish she had just omitted this chapter. On the plus side, however, this study is very comprehensive (we even get animal twins!), and presents the surprisingly complex biology of twinship with great clarity. Segal, herself a twin, also incorporates an understanding of the role her own subjective experience plays in her comprehension of the topic, which is refreshing.I would also suggest not getting the Kindle edition of this book. There are numerous photographs, which are hard to see on an e-reader, and a useful glossary at the end would have been easier to access if I had been reading the print version.

This scholarly work is easy to read and quite interesting.Twinship is addrssed from many angles and I leaned a great deal.

This book has a lot of great information but it is very densely written. To me it seems more like a research/term paper than a book for the general public. While she does explain things in laymens terms, there is a LOT of data and facts thrown in that are tedious to read. Overall, I'd recommend the book if you are having multiples because it does bring up a lot of points to consider as your raise your kids. The biggest point for me was the differences in fraternal and identical twins and how they really are different and not all just "twins."

I have found this book to be especially fascinating because I have 3 year old g/b fraternal twins. Not only are research studies discussed in detail, but we get the "behind" the scenes details surrounding past and current research and how it applies to twin and non-twin perspectives.

Absolutely loved this book! Made me contemplate so much about nature versus nurture and struck a deep chord within me on so many different levels-especially being an identical twin myself. I found myself saying "that's my sister and I to a fault!" in so many different instances.

Fascinating reading, concerning new understanding of complexities in lives of twins. A number of different cases. Some twins separated accidentally at birth and then re-united later; others growing up separately, but sharing genetic traits much more than mannerisms resulting from the environments in which they were raised.

ok

All three books arrived as expected in good condition, whether new or used. I am pleased.
