Michel Onfray has been linked to the new atheists and his assertive style in the arguments against Christianity, Judaism, and Islam makes that make some sense, but this "manifesto" is more interesting and smart in where Onfray differs: first, Onfray removes Spinoza and the pantheists as well as Epicureanism from the new atheist claims of them being atheists and lays modern atheism at the feed of the early Enlightenment. Furthermore, more like Nietzsche and less like Dawkins, Onfray is bothered by the essentially Christian assumptions of most secularism and atheism. These are interesting because they were not really adopted in most of the new atheist in English speaking world: Onfray, while a champion of science, is also not interested in a lot of the new atheist scientism and is skeptical of the way science is used and seems less inclined to be a pollyanna on the topic. The complaints against the monotheisms are declaratory, aggressive, although historically informed compared to some of the English-speaking writers on the topic. However, it is not tightly argued and does not really take counter-veiling trends in the religion seriously after his sympathetic introduction. It is written in the style of the early 20th manifesto and is thus a polemic and not a research piece.
I think this book used history very well in setting up the direction of mostly the religions pertaining to the god of Abraham. Michael Onfray is a very astute writer and definitely uses a vocabulary well above the traditional 7th grade reading level, but I was able to keep up :) I would say it was worth my time to read. Thank you Michael Onfray.
A truly excellent book, possibly the best I've ever read. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Verbose, perhaps, but clear and insightful. A call for rationalism in this time of holy war.
I ordered this book because I thought it sounded interesting, and since I am a seeker of facts and wisdom this book approached the topic of religion in a unique way. When I first began reading this book I did not like the writing style of the author; however, the material became so interesting that I wound up really liking this volume. In fact, I agree with almost all the author's conclusions on these topics. This well-written text is organized into four parts. They include the following:Part of covers Atheology, which is a term I was not familiar with even though I had read numerous books in the past on atheism. Various topics are covered in this section and provides an overview of the author's hypothesis on Judeo-Christian epistemology. The second part explains Monotheisms. This section deals with the tyranny of afterlives, bonfires of the intelligence and seeking the opposite of the real. The third part focuses on Christianity. I enjoyed this section because it explains the influence of St. Paul on the historical development of believing in the Christian myths. The final part covers Theocracy. Many areas are explored in this section such as selective exploitation of the religious texts, the death fixation, Christianity and National Socialism and toward a post-Christian Secular Order.As mentioned previously, I liked this book a lot but it seems to me that even though the author makes an excellent case for the relationship philosophically of the three major religions (Christianity, Judism and Muslim) and that of Nazi National Socialism, he fails in one important area. He does not emphasize the simple fact, that all forms of religion are all part of the collectivist mentality which also includes Communism and all forms of Socialism. Indeed, the only difference is that they worship the state (In all dictatorial type of governments) rather than a God. All forms of collectivism are anti-science, anti-life and anti-individualism.In conclusion, I still recommend this book for anyone who is willing to think for themselves and are not brain washed by religious dogma. The sad thing is that people who need to read this excellent book will refuse to face the facts of reality when it come to religious dogma and will not read this text.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. A crisply written, passionate expose of the three major monotheistic religions that manages to be engaging, revealing and well researched using the most impeccable of sources - the Koran, the Bible and Talmud and Torah.The major thesis? These religions are created by men to empower some men and disempower most, especially women and children, and to deny the now of life as it is lived, for a mythical life in the hereafter.To think that Mein Kampf was never placed on the Catholic Church's index of banned books whilst those of Sartre, De Beauvoir et al were, is enough to enrage the most reasonable of men.We are reminded too of the Original Sin - to eat of the tree of knowledge. Oh yeah.Minor thesis? The ignorant and unreasonable will win if we don't continue to search, read, learn, doubt, and struggle to understand.
Absolutely brilliant. Logoc, historical facts, ethic against crimes of fanatism and egotism. This makes you think and look at mankind history form different angle. Only for open minded people using thoer IQ. The rest would be probably annoyed and troubled by the book like this.
Clear and to the point with historical background that I was unaware of in terms of the personalities involved.
I enjoyed this book. It has been translated from French and while the translation is very well done, it includes a lot of words that are rarely used in English so it is often rather dense. The theme is fascinating and compelling.
