If you, like me, were confused about where all the Miss Marple sort stories were, then I'm here to help. This volume includes The Thirteen Problems followed by stories from The Regatta Mystery and Other Stories, Three Blind Mice and Other Stories, and Double Sin and Other Stories. Everything after The Thirteen Problems is ALSO included in Miss Marple's Final Cases (which has only 2 additional stories, which do not involve the Marple character).There is no reason to buy Final Cases unless you are interested in the two non-Marple stories.I would suggest two possible reading orders for Miss Marple: Start with Murder at the Vicarage, then buy The Complete Short Stories and read The Thirteen Problems from it, which is the first chunk of the book. Then read the other novels in publication order ending with Sleeping Murder, and finish with the rest of Short Stories.Alternatively, read the full novels in publication order from The Murder at the Vicarage to Sleeping Murder and end with The Complete Short Stories. This will be a slightly sentimental trip back to early Miss Marple which may be a welcome treat as you near the end of her available material.You can also read Thirteen Problems in its own volume and then end with Miss Marple's Final Cases, excluding The Dressmaker's Doll and In a Glass Darkly if you only want Marple. You will not have missed any Marple stories. The stories are printed in a slightly different order in the two collections, but it does not make a difference.
This book collects all the short stories starring Agatha Christie’s famous elderly spinster detective Miss Marple.The most important thing to know about them is that in three out of four short stories, nothing is really at stake. There is no murderer to be caught or punished because the murderer has already been caught and punished. In the majority of the stories, Miss Marple is sitting around in a group of friends who are telling each other about murder cases they’ve encountered for which they know the solution and are challenging their friends to solve it.The format of these stories hearkens back to the armchair detectives of the 1910s and 1920s such as Baroness Orczy’s Old Man in the Corner. While the stories don’t have much suspense, the puzzles are interesting and Christie gives Miss Marple’s friends enough characterization to keep them interesting while also working a nice dose of charm and humor into the discussion of the case.In many of the early armchair stories, Miss Marple is somewhat reminiscent of G.K. Chesterton's Father Brown in his earliest stories. She sits back and leaves most of the conversation to the younger people only to contribute the actual solution at the end. In many ways, she seems like anyone'stereotypical grandmother or elderly aunt, though perhaps more honest as Miss Marple not only admits to gossiping but defends the practice. However, she has an amazing mind that has taken in all she has experienced while living in a small village and used it as a frame of reference for understanding human behavior, including the criminal crime.Of course, there are some stories that deviate from the armchair format and and are more traditional detective stories. I enjoyed these more. My favorite was, “The Case of the Perfect Maid†which has Miss Marple investigating a case of a maid whose career is in trouble after leaving the employee of two strange sisters under a cloud of suspicion. I also found “Sanctuary,†which has Miss Marple assisting in the investigation of man who died in a church to be very enjoyable.Overall, while I’m not a huge fan of pure puzzle mysteries, I found myself thoroughly entertained by this volume. It’s a testament to the genius of Agatha Christie that these stories are so entertaining. Also for 20 Miss Marple short stories, the book is very economically priced either in paperback or as an ebook.
To paraphrase Ginger Rogers, Miss Marple does everything Hercule Poirot does, but backwards and in high heels. After all, M. Poirot is a retired police officer and a professional detective and (as a professional and a MALE) has the respect and cooperation of the police on all levels and of lawyers, tycoons, and even aristocrats. In a world where elderly women are respected in theory but not in practice, it's a testament to Miss Marple's greatness that she not only figures out "whodunit" but makes the authorities listen to her!When I recently looked over Agatha Christie's publication dates, I was surprised to learn that Poirot made his appearance (THE AFFAIR AT STYLES - 1920) a full decade before Miss Marple (MURDER AT THE VICARAGE - 1930.) The first book of Miss Marple short stories (THE THIRTEEN PROBLEMS) appeared in 1932 and then the character went into "retirement" until she was resurrected in 1942 in THE BODY IN THE LIBRARY. Ten more Miss Marple mysteries followed in the 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's. Did Mrs. Christie become fonder of her "old lady detective" as she moved into old age herself? In the introduction to THE THIRTEEN PROBLEMS (which is included in this book) Dame Agatha talks about the fun of writing about Miss Marple and says that she feels the character is at her best in short stories.I don't know about that, but I love short mystery stories and have collected all of the Miss Marple stories in several volumes. I was thrilled to find them collected in a Kindle ebook. There's a lot to choose from. Some are crimes that Miss Marple solves herself. Others are stories told to her and which she correctly (of course) guesses the solution. There are plenty of murders, naturally. Many are husbands murdering their wives, although sometimes an innocent husband is suspected by police and on-lookers and only cleared by Miss Marple's intervention. Nice to know that not ALL men want to be rid of their spouses. There is smuggling (Cornwall, where else?) and a delightful story of two young lovers and the treasure hidden by their slyly humorous old uncle. Old bachelors, as Miss Marple explains indulgently, mean well but lack common sense.I think that these stories are such a joy to read because the author loved writing them and loved the character. Enthusiasm is more catching than the common cold. And a good thing, too.
