We have two murder stories going on. The main is a 40 year old case in a small town involving the death of an American Indian girl in 1976. Originally classified a suicide by the ME, the Sheriff in 1976 and Tracy, herself, believe it to be murder. Proving it is another matter and the way Mr., Dugoni goes about solving the crime is very good. He throws a good twist into the mix as the methodical solving of the case is unfolding.The secondary murder takes place in Tracy's hometown of Seattle and involves a case of domestic abuse. Her usual supporting cast are busy solving this one. for good measure, Mr. Dugoni has thrown a twist in here as well.The main protagonist, Tracy Crosswhite and her supporting cast from the Seattle PD are very well developed. The Crosswhite novels are a bit different in that they methodically detail the crimes as thrillers. They also detail the solving of the crimes very well as police procedurals.Once again, Mr. Dugoni just keeps moving forward steadily. He wastes no chapters with unwanted fillers or fluff.This is the 3rd installment of the original trilogy. A 4th book is in the works due in Jan. 2017.
This is the third novel in the Tracy Crosswhite Series. I had just finished the sixth novel in this series, and I knew that I needed to go back and read the only novel in the series that I had not read.The novel opens in southern Washington state with the death of a young Native American woman in 1976. The death is ruled a suicide, but a brand new deputy sheriff, Buzz Almond, doesn’t believe so. He does a thorough investigation. He has his suspicions but the investigation turns cold.The storylines jumps to modern day — 2016 in this case. Tracy receives a call of a shooting in an upper-class community. It was domestic violence where the husband was shot by the wife. The wife’s father is a prominent and contentious defense attorney. It looks like an open and shut case, but all isn’t as it seems and becomes quite complex very quickly.The storyline moves to southern Washington with the funeral of Buzz Almond. Tracy and her boyfriend, Dan, are invited to the funeral by Jenny Almond, Buzz’s daughter. Jenny was a classmate of Tracy’s at the Police Academy. She became homesick and returned home to follow in her father’s footsteps. She asks Tracy to review the case file that her father had kept all those years of the young Native American woman’s death to see if there was something there. While the death did not occur within her jurisdiction, she would grease the skids with the local police for Tracy. Tracy accepts but must clear it with her captain and longtime nemesis. Both storylines proceed with interesting twists and turns that captured and maintained my attention throughout the entire novel.The B-storyline is rich. The relationship between Tracy and her boyfriend, Dan, is maturing with significant steps occurring in this book. The major B-storyline concerns Tracy’s partner, Kins, and his marriage. These B-storylines are woven into the main storylines very naturally and enrichens the enjoyment of the novel for me.This novel uses only four f-bomb and a few more minor uses of vulgar language. All of it was consistent with the characters and situation. There wasn’t any graphic sex. Therefore, these two areas should not stop anyone from reading this novel. The author provides adequate backfill for any points from the previous novels that pertain to this novel.As I wrote at the start of this review, I recently completed the sixth novel in this series. I enjoyed that novel so much that I just needed to go back read the one novel that I had skipped. I really enjoyed reading this novel. I give it five stars and strongly recommend it to all to read.
I really, really wanted to give this book a five, but the first few chapters were choppy and I actually thought about starting over and making an outline. But then I figured it would all come together eventually, and boy, did it! An enjoyable read, characters well defined, dialog realistic, just what I've learned to expect from Robert Dugoni. The references to, I guess, previous novels were superfluous, and once when Susan's grave was mentioned, I tried to remember which case she was involved in, then realized "none". Well written, no big surprises, you discover as you go along who did what to whom. It helped a lot when time frame was changed that it was noted at the beginning of the chapters. With two first person characters 40 years apart and two cases at once, the reader needs to pay attention.
These Tracy Crosswhite books just keep getting better and better. This time Detective Tracy Crosswhite is working on two cases. One, a cold case involving a young Native American high school student with a bright future ahead of her who's death 40 years prior was ruled a suicide. The young deputy, Buzz Almond, who worked on the case never agreed with the findings and had kept a file hidden at home. After serving as Sherriff and passing away, his daughter, Jenny becomes the new Sherriff and discovers the file. Jenny senses her father was right and calls in her friend, homicide detective Tracy Crosswhite to take a look at the case. What she discovers is a secret that has ruined the lives of nearly everyone involved. As with previous Crosswhite novels, the characters are well developed, you can easily relate to each of them and become engrossed in each of their stories, the end is a surprise worth waiting for, in the other case, a good upstanding man and father going through a bitter divorce is killed while coming to pickup his fragile son for the weekend. Both the son and the materialistic, self-centered, soon to be ex-wife admit to shooting the Tom, the father and estranged husband and things just don't add up. With both of them admitting to shooting Tom, there's reasonable doubt to convict either of them. The fact that the wife's father is a talented and successful defense attorney only adds to the problem. Tracy and her team have to bring all of their experience and their sometimes non- traditional methods of detective work they can to bare as they work to unwind the mystery of what happened to Tom Collins. Another page turner that I didn't want to end. Keeps you engrossed throughout. I've already started reading the next one.
