Linda Dale Bloomberg, lead author, is former adjunct faculty and dissertation advisor inadult learning and leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University. As senior researcherfor the South African Human Sciences Research Council and National Institute for PersonnelResearch, Dr. Bloomberg’s work focused on change management, diversity initiatives, andenhanced workplace learning. She currently develops curriculum for qualitative research ingraduate programs, serves as dissertation chair and subject matter expert, and also serves asconsultant to various research, higher education, and nonprofit advisory boards. She is founderof Bloomberg Associates and ILIAD (Institute for Learning Innovations and Adult Development)and a cofounder of Columbia University’s Global Learning and Leadership Institute. Shehas authored and edited numerous publications in the fields of organizational evaluation, qualitativeresearch, leadership development, adult learning, and distance education. Dr. Bloombergis a contributor to the recently published Sage Encyclopedia of Educational Research, Measurement,and Evaluation (2018), and is currently working on Executive Coaching: Supporting AdultDevelopment and Implications for Learning and Leadership. Fair warning: the sample study topic may make you panic about not finishing your dissertation EVER. Kind of recommend the authors use a different sample dissertation topic next time around. Having to read a sample dissertation chapter on "The reasons why ABD doctoral students have not completed their dissertations" at the end of every chapter was distractingly despressing and despair-inducing. Those were all the reasons why I bought the darn book too!I wish they'd had some data from students who completed their dissertations--that would have been useful, having recently completed students explain how they went from feeling lost in the woods (like those in the sample) to successful completion. But, unlike in shady massage parlors, in life, this book, and your dissertation, there are no guarantees of happy endings.Still, if the sample chapters had been about a touchy-feely qualitative examination of the widgitiness of widgets it would have been the promised roadmap.I've made it to Chapter 9 and find it makes no sense as far as how to apply it to any random topic. But, I think its gist may be this, which also happens to be the key to life: a qualitative dissertation, and life in general, are like a 1980s Choose-Your-Own Adventure book. Yes, you get to make it up as you go along, and the reason no one can tell you how to do yours is because you are unique, like a special, special snowflake. So figure it out your own darn self. Or end up like one of the respondents in their sample study. Or whatever. It's your life. Basically, as you already know without reading this book, your advisor and the authors of this book can't write your dissertation for you and can't tell you what should be in it. So suck it up, buttercup. Muddle through and write something so you have something, anything, to hand in and defend. Except Amazon book reviews. Don't spend your time writing those. Or you'll never get your dissertation done. But by all means read them and this book.
This is a very detailed book that I've already recommended to some of my classmates who are at the same stage in their dissertation process. I love how the book outlines the different chapters of the dissertation in clear and precise detail. Even better are the example sections that follow. The book is helping me to write a very strong, but concise dissertation!
